National Training Programs

Montgomery Dive Club has long been recognized as a consistent producer of nationally and internationally competitive divers. Admission into the MDC National Training Programs requires the permission of the Program Director, a significant commitment of time and dedication, and a willingness to travel to national and international competitions. This is a year-round program focused on the highest levels of personal and team achievement. High School Diving

Work with a professional coach and set your sites on making the team, qualifying for Regionals, or capturing a top spot at Metros. This program has been tailored to meet the needs of High School divers, focusing on developing a competitive diving list from the one-meter springboard.

Masters Diving

Think diving is over just because you graduated from college, had a few kids, or retired from your day job? Not at all! Divers all over the world enjoy the sport of diving throughout their entire lives. This Fall MDC offers programs for former divers who aren’t content to hang up that Speedo quite yet.

Human Springs Team

This program is for young divers with experience in summer league competition and high school divers who want to learn three meter and platform skills. The Human Springs Team introduces new, more advanced skills, greater use of dry-land training, as well as strength, flexibility and conditioning. Optional competitions in and around the national capitol area will be offered to those who are interested.

Two-Day Program. Our two practices per week program is a great transition from our lesson program, and also serves as a perfect starting point for Summer League competitors who want to gain an extra advantage during the off-season.

Three-Day Program. At three practices per week, you can expect some pretty significant improvements over a single session – a perfect place for summer divers who want to make significant improvements in their diving skills.

Four-Day Program or More. If you are ready for a greater challenge or just can’t get enough of the sport, this is your program. This is also an excellent starting point for ex-gymnasts and trampolinists looking to transition to a new sport, anyone aspiring to compete as a scholarship athlete in the NCAA, and divers hoping to qualify for our National Training Programs.

Human Springs Lessons

These lessons are recommended for absolute beginner divers age 5-7, and children with attention issues who wish to learn more about the sport of diving. All lessons are 45 minutes long, and emphasize safe basic diving and tumbling skills. Participants at MAC, MLK and GISC will also learn basic trampoline skills.

One-Day Program - Our one-lesson per week program is recommended for beginning recreational divers with little or no experience. Participants learn proper technique for forward and backward jumps, head-first forward and backward entries, and basic dives.

Two-Day Program - Young divers with an interest in advancing their skills and learning more advanced dives should attend 2 classes per week.

Three-Day Program or More - Divers who enjoy shorter practices but still want to move through the skill levels at a fast pace may attend three or more classes per week. Participants can expect much faster improvement at three or more days per week.

Human Springs

Human Springs diving programs will channel your child’s energy into a series of increasingly challenging skills that teach self-discipline, focus, and problem solving strategies. We begin with simple movements and progress at the appropriate speed for each individual. At certain milestones along the way, divers are rewarded with certificates marking their progress. As they earn certificates kids learn to dive safely from the one-meter, three-meter and platform levels at their own pace, under the watchful eye of professional diving instructors.

July, 30 2010 Human Springs Programs are designed to give divers of all ages and abilities an opportunity to learn this amazing sport at their own pace. Click below to download detailed information.

Human Springs Team picks up right where summer diving programs leave off. We take the fun of your summer diving teams, and throw in world class instructors and the best training equipment around. The result is an opportunity for divers to keep on improving during the school year and come back in the summer with all new skills. Divers on the Human Springs Team will have the option of participating in competitions created just for them, and travel to pools around Maryland and Virginia to show their skills.

  • A Message from New MDC Program Director Doug Beavers

July, 30 2010 A Message from New Program Director Doug Beavers

It is with a mixture of anticipation and humility that I introduce myself as the new Director of Diving Programs for the Montgomery County Recreation Department. Since 1989 the Montgomery Dive Club has built a reputation for competitive excellence in USA Diving. This reputation was the result of the talent, hard work and dedication of many fine coaches and divers. So when I learned that I would be taking over beginning this fall, I was honored by the opportunity and humbled by the high competitive standards that have been set before me.

My approach to building a diving program is to begin with a clear purpose. Our purpose is to grow and improve the County’s diving programs. We will grow the program by setting a goal of creating the best developmental diving program in the country. We will offer programs that integrate with and complement existing summer diving organizations like the MCDL, NVSL, CCSDA, and CMDL. This will be a new offering from MDC with its own identity, known as the Human Springs. We will further improve by bringing in new staff members, leveraging technology, making better use of existing tools like trampoline and water belts, creating a positive, highly collaborative coaching and training atmosphere, and establishing clear communications and policies.

    Developmental Diving

Over the past few months I have talked with a lot of people about my interest in developmental diving. There is an amazing community of beginner divers in this area and we have already established an excellent working relationship with the leadership in those organizations. Over the next few years I envision a very open and cooperative relationship developing between MDC and the summer diving community that will greatly benefit both organizations. Most importantly, it will create tremendous opportunities for kids to improve and gain an appreciation for our sport.

As I mentioned, MDC will offer a new program tailored to the needs of the developmental diving community. This is our Human Springs program. While the program is new to MDC, I have been using and refining it for the last 15 years with great success. Similar to martial arts where you earn belts of different colors as you master different skill sets, Human Springs divers will work their way through ten increasingly challenging levels as they attempt to master new skills. Each level is made up of the dryland and in-water skills that are essential to developing safe diving techniques. This approach gives divers clear goals to pursue, provides structure for instructors to follow, and rewards divers for their progress and continued participation.

Human Springs Divers will also have the option of competing at meets specifically designed for them in Maryland and Virginia. I already have interest from other programs in the area looking forward to growing this program with us.

    National Training Programs

For the vast majority of divers the Human Springs Programs will provide a perfect opportunity to learn and improve in the sport. I expect that many of our Human Springs will learn a full complement of dives on 1-meter, 3-meter and platform as they continue to practice and compete with us year after year.

But a very small percentage of young athletes will have truly exceptional physical abilities. Of those, an even smaller percentage will be willing to commit to the rigors of training necessary to reach the highest levels of achievement in our sport. Those who do may be offered the opportunity to join our National Training Program (NTP), a small group of athletes who train for National and International competition.

Participation will be by invitation-only, and continued membership is a privilege reserved exclusively for those who can maintain the highest standards of excellence in effort, attitude and behavior.

    Coaching Staff

For all of our programs I have assembled a coaching staff that will provide a balance of technical knowledge, structured discipline, and positive encouragement. I will set high standards for my coaching staff, demanding integrity, enthusiasm, attentiveness, and focus on the ultimate benefit of the athlete from all MDC coaches.

I have selected four coaches to help me lead the program in a new direction.

Jeff Stabile will serve as Director of Competitive Diving. In this role he will be responsible for daily coaching of National Training Program (NTP) divers at both MAC and GISC, establishing their strength conditioning and training programs in collaboration with the staff, developing the NTP competition schedule, and coordinating meets hosted by MDC. In addition he will be active in coaching our Human Springs Programs.

Jeff was previously the head coach at Rose Bowl Aquatics in LA, and is currently coaching the Tropic Lightning Diving Team in Hawaii. He will relocate from Hawaii in August to join our staff. I have known Jeff for over 20 years, and I have tremendous respect for his technical skills as a coach, his encyclopedic knowledge of USA Diving history, and his passion for the sport. He was a very successful competitor in the NCAA and USA Diving, continues to excel in Masters Diving, has been active in USA Diving and AAU administration, and has produced numerous Junior and Senior National competitors over his coaching career. I’m confident that parents and athletes will find him to be a good person, an excellent communicator, and a demanding coach.

I have asked Ivan and Dennis Bondarenko to join our staff from the previous MDC administration. They bring continuity for the returning MDC divers, structure, discipline, technical excellence and experience at the highest levels of our sport. They’ve proven themselves to be friendly and personable in their coaching styles while still challenging athletes to excel.

The Bondarenko brothers will dedicate a great deal of their time to the NTP divers at both MAC and GISC. They will be instrumental in helping Jeff and I to develop training programs for NTP divers, and their input will be invaluable in refining the Human Springs Program to ensure the high quality of our progressions. Both Ivan and Dennis will also be active in working with Human Springs Divers.

Patrick Meck has been working for MDC at MLK and Olney for some time now, quietly developing a following of beginner and intermediate divers as he hones his own skills as a professional diving coach. His enthusiasm for the sport in infectious, and I can see Patrick developing into an outstanding JO and Senior level coach. This fall we intend to have Patrick continue his excellent work at the MLK and Olney facilities, and work to integrate those programs seamlessly with the more advanced programs at MAC and GISC.

What about me? Well, I’ll be on the pool deck coaching Human Springs and NTP divers at MAC, GISC, MLK and/or Olney between six and nine hours a day. I’ll work as hard as I physically can to make sure that our program has the resources it needs to allow our divers to reach their goals.

I will be bringing in additional coaches over the next few weeks, so check back often for updates and full bios on new members of the staff.

Feel free to send me an e-mail if you have any questions, concerns or comments.

    See you at the pool!
